Overview
A conference in honour of the centenary of the birth of George Whalley will be held at Queen’s University, July 24-26, 2015. Each one of the three days will recognize different aspects of Whalley’s life and work:
Friday, July 24: Romanticism and Aesthetics: Critical reflections on art, culture and nature
Saturday, July 25: George Whalley, the Man and the Legend
Sunday, July 26: The Canadian Writers’ Conference 60th Anniversary
Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all three days of the event, which will include keynote talks, panels, and papers. Friday afternoon a reception will be hosted by the Principal of Queen's University to honour Whalley's contributions to the institution. Saturday afternoon some of the event will be held at the HMCS Cataraqui, where Whalley was the commanding officer in the early 1950s, to honour his wartime experience.
Saturday evening, Duo Turgeon, the elite piano duo, will perform a concert in honour of Whalley's love of music and the time he spent as the president of the Kingston Symphony, during which he brought the renowed Vaghy Quartet to Kingston and Queen's. The Isabel Bader Centre for Performing Arts will host the event, which begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the general public are available here for $25.
Members of the Kingston community and Whalley’s former colleagues and students, family and friends, are all welcome to attend. Register for the conference here. A concert ticket is included with the registration fee.
The proceedings of the conference, including papers, and possibly audio and video recordings, will be edited and published in an open-access edition online.
